Plan the connections, not just the cities

A useful route plan considers stations, transfer margins, arrival time and your next local connection—not only the line between two names on a map.

The five-part route check

  1. Door-to-door: map home to departure, stop to stop, and arrival to final address.
  2. Time: compare the full duration, not just the scheduled vehicle time.
  3. Risk: assess the cost of missing a transfer and build a proportionate buffer.
  4. Requirements: verify documents and operator conditions for your dates.
  5. Fallback: know where to get current updates and how to continue if delayed.

Making a connection less fragile

Separate tickets usually leave more of the connection risk with the traveller. Even when a journey appears well timed, road traffic, station layout and boarding cut-offs can matter. If a missed connection would disrupt accommodation or another booking, choose a longer margin or an overnight stop. Confirm whether the onward service leaves from the same place and whether you need to retrieve and re-check luggage.

For airport connections, use the airport and local transit operators’ current guidance. Add time for terminal transfers, check-in or security requirements that apply to your next leg, and the time of day. A coach arrival is not a guarantee that an onward flight or train connection is feasible.

Bus, rail and other options

Compare total journey time, station location, frequency on your date, luggage needs, flexibility and the impact of disruption. Rail may serve different stations or offer different interchange patterns; air travel adds airport access and security time. There is no universally best mode. Check current conditions from the relevant providers and compare the whole trip rather than a single leg.
